Two centuries of mission work

In the 1800s, a Thai-Portuguese catholic known as Father Pascal founded a church in Bang Rak. Back then, this was the outer edge of Bangkok. Two centuries later, the cathedral has grown into its current grand state, standing the test of time and witnessing the expansion of the city.

In the crypt

Under the cathedral lies a crypt with the remains of past bishops and missionaries. The most famous is Thai Roman catholic priest Father Nicholas Boonkerd Kitbamrung, who was proclaimed a martyr by the Vatican after he died in prison during Thailand’s time of conflict with France in the 40s. While his relics are no longer in the crypt, a special altar devoted to him was constructed on the left side of the cathedral.

Famous schools

The Assumption Cathedral is the main church of the Archdiocese of Bangkok, it is also an important provider of education. Surrounding the church are the Assumption College, Assumption Convent School, and Assumption Suksa, among the most prestigious primary and secondary schools in the city.
