Long history
Legend has it that over two centuries ago a fisherman found the idol of Amman - the divine mother in Hinduism and god of rain - here by the seaside. Local women immediately built a bamboo for the revered idol. Over the years the worshippers kept adding bits and pieces until it became what you see today, a spiritual masterpiece that provides spiritual solace for tens of thousands of Indian workers at the port.
Fire walking festival
The entire community gathers for a spectacular Thimithi or firewalking ceremony. This is a Hindu ritual originating from Tamil Nadu, South India. The best time to visit this temple is during Diwali – the festival of light.
