iSurprise Post Office

Old post office in charming colonial building

Postal services

This modest colonial building has been the Ahlone community post office for over a century. Postmaster U Win Aye Maw has been stationed here for ten years. Why not send a postcard while you’re here. Local mail takes the 100 kyat stamp, an overseas postcards will need a 500 kyat stamp.

Burmese stamps

In the early days of the colony, the British used the stamps of British India and from 1937 they simply printed BURMA on the British stamps. It was not until 1940 that the first real Burma stamps were issued. They had a picture of King George VI.

The lady

Aung San Suu Kyi has never appeared on her own country’s stamp. When her portrait was included in a set of stamps issued in Norway in 2001, to mark the centenary of the Nobel Peace Prize, the stamps were even banned in Burma.
