Rice dreams
This neighbourhood institution has made clay pot rice for more than 40 years, its gas burners hard at work infusing rice with all sorts of savoury flavours. There are more than 30 choices on the menu, but the most famous is eel and chicken. The frog rice is another highlight. Wash it down with healthy pork bone soup.
A winter tradition
Though you can order claypot rice at any time of year, it’s particularly popular in the winter. The combination of rich, soya-based flavours and crispy rice makes it a particularly heart-warming dish.
Charcoal pots
There’s another reason why it’s a wintertime favourite: charcoal. While most claypot restaurants use gas stoves, Kwan Kee uses a combination of gas and charcoal, keeping that age-old smoky aroma alive.
More clay pot
Wing Hop Sing 永合成煲仔飯 is another restaurant famous for its clay pot rice. They use an oven to cook the dish, giving it an usual texture. Try the minced beef. You won’t regret it.
