Methodist congregation
This now abandoned church was founded by an Indian missionary group in 1880 as the Methodist Episcopal Church. Many of the local Methodist community were South Indian Christian migrants from today’s Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu. The church name comes from their native language ‘Telugu’.
Vocational training
The Methodist congregation in this part of town has slowly declined over the years and with it the maintenance of the church building. But through its lively pre-school and vocational training centre the church maintains an important community function.

Local wet market
The church building is run down and slowly being ‘eaten up‘ by the popular 38th street wet market. Daily supplies of fresh meat, fish and flowers are being ferried across the river from Dala. The market is open 24/7, but if you want to see the action, come early morning from 7am to 9am.
