Community shrines
Ancestral shrines are dotted around the streets of Muen Ngoen Kong. There are even six shrines hosted by different families, that protect the entire community, like the one of Auntie Nom, each bears a unique family name.
Northern beliefs
Before Buddhism came to Chiang Mai the Lanna people worshipped ancestral and natural spirits. Even today, at wedding celebrations, the couple first visits ancestral shrines with offerings of rice, bananas, coconuts and flowers before setting off to their wedding venues.
