Wood street
Residents recall the post-war years when Ki Ling Lane was a hub of wood factories busy making wooden crates for cargo shipment. Gone are the days when Mr Lee employed five staff to collect raw wood. Now very few orders come in, and there isn’t much business.
The last ones standing
Mr Lee and his two sisters are the 2nd generation owners of Tai Yik Ho Wood Factory. Mr Lee, who is in his late 60s, says: “There are probably only two wood factories still operating in Hong Kong, one in Chai Wan and us. We own the shop, so there is no rental pressure, but I’m thinking of closing next year.”
Wood recycling
Mr Lee and his sisters now focus on recycling wooden pieces from construction sites. They collect wood from all over the city, remove the nails, cut them into equally sized pieces and resell them.
